What We Build looks beyond the structures themselves to the people behind them—their labor, experiences, and the lives they are building alongside the homes they construct.
Through the stories of immigrant construction workers, the film explores the complicated relationship between labor, immigration, housing, and belonging in America.

The Invisible Force
Before there was a film, there were photographs.
The Invisible Force began as a photographic exploration of the immigrant workers behind America's residential construction industry. Made on construction sites and alongside the people working within them, the photographs intentionally draw attention to those who are missing from the frame. Their labor is embedded in the homes and neighborhoods around us, even as the people behind that work often disappear from view once the job is complete.
